Postcodes

starting to think about postcodes, and how best to display a map of uk postcode regions. each region will need to have a value associated with it, or maybe even flood filled depending on the value. looking into SVG as a way of formatting and displaying vector based data instead of bitmap (which would be a nightmare me thinks). SVG looks very promising, an XML for vector graphics. messed about with creating a rudamentory map, tracing a gif i found using freehand, then munging the exported data with a few regexps to produce SVG friendly polygons. all looked fine until i relised freehand works with 0,0 in the bottom left, SVG at the top left. everything has come out transposed. looks great, except upside down and twisted by 45 degrees :( will have to work on that, but happy none the less. proved some initial concept stuff. currently using Adobe's SVG plugin to view all this with IE, must find something for FBSD that can render SVG. adobe have produced some fine software, but they sort of miss the point with portability when they only seem to write MS based software.

Polystyrene cups

read on the side of a box of polystyrene cups : "Insulated for hot and cold drinks." wow, reminds me of the Steven Wright joke about how thermos flasks know to keep something hot or cold. memo to marketing - please look up definition of insulation.

Firefox Extension - Linkification

At last the problem solved - plain text URLs automagically surrounded by anchor tags. No more bouncing on the OPTION-C,OPTION-T,OPTION-V keys to open them. And enforces once again what a genius idea it was to allow extensions to be written in Firefox/Mozilla. The developers can get on with making the core browser even better whilst leaving everyone else to work on the periphery stuff.

Right click in OSX RDC

Just had to remote desktop from my iBook into a Windows machine using the MS Remote Desktop Connection and do a right click in an application too stupid not to have a menu equivalent for the function. Hum. One mouse button. Some trial and error lead me to find out that SHIFT+CTRL+MOUSE BUTTON translates into a right click, in RDC anyway.

Hope this is useful to someone.
